At our care homes across the country the two-minute silence was observed at 11am today and there were lots of activities and events taking place to mark the occasion today, as well as planned for Remembrance Sunday.
At Kingsmead care home in Swindon there was an hour of wartime songs as well as poppies made by the residents and lots of stories to be shared.
For one resident, Cyril Moorman who is 96 years old, the day brings back special memories. Cyril was a steam engine driver in Swindon during the war. While the celebrations were taking place on VE Day, Cyril was driving the train from Shrivenham, taking wounded soldiers up north. He remembers the carriages were painted bright green with crosses on them. He was very proud to be able to help the men and his country.
