In the world of fundraising, sometimes you’ve got to think outside the box, or in this case, get inside a paddling pool of baked beans.
That’s right, Healthcare Homes Operations Manager Riet Jones is marking her retirement from full time work in care with a pledge to bathe in beans at the Walcot Hall fete on Friday all in the name of raising funds for cancer research.
Riet is known for her dedication to making things run smoothly within Healthcare Homes and was acting manager at Walcot Hall before we welcomed new manager Connie Hughes in August. Despite officially ‘retiring’ Riet is now leading the team at Barking Hall in Suffolk as well as turning her enthusiasm to diving into a sea of baked beans.
She’ll be doing this in front of Walcot Hall residents, her colleagues, friends, and family, as a finale to the fete in Walcot Green, Diss, at around 4pm. It’s a spectacle you won’t want to miss.
“I’ve done lots of fundraising in the past but nothing quite as mad as this, ” said Riet, who was born in The Netherlands and has worked in care for 40 years as a nurse and community psychiatric nurse as well as a care home manager.
In her own family Riet has lost loved ones to different forms of cancer and others are currently fighting the disease. There are also several colleagues, past and present, at Walcot Hall undergoing cancer treatment.
“I don’t mind making a fool of myself and it is all for a good cause,” added Riet, who admitted that she does like baked beans on toast but may change her mind after Friday’s bath.
The fight against cancer is a tough one and you can help by sponsoring Riet’s bean bath. Every pound goes directly to cancer research, helping to make a difference in the lives of those fighting the disease. Visitors to the fete can also purchase a tin of beans to add to the paddling pool.
