The Barking Hall care home team took part in the Needham Market Raft Race last Sunday—and emerged victorious.
Competing as Team ‘Betty’ in memory of resident Betty Gate, who sadly passed away last year, the team demonstrated remarkable determination and community spirit throughout the event.
More than just a race, this was a heartfelt tribute and a fundraising effort for Alzheimer’s UK, a cause close to the home’s heart. Betty’s daughter, Sarah Burrows, reflected on the significance of the event: “Mum loved Needham Lake, even during her battle with Alzheimer’s. Seeing the team race in her memory really touched us all.”
Team captain and Activities Coordinator Tanya Bolger expressed confidence before the race, stating, “We are going to win this race. I am determined.” Their dedication paid off with a well-earned first-place finish, much to the team’s delight.
Event organiser Amanda Reardon highlighted the strong sense of community the race fosters: “This race means a lot to many people and reflects the spirit here. We hope it will continue for many years to come.”
Thanks to widespread local support, the event also secured a £1,300 grant from Mid Suffolk District Council, which will be used to purchase equipment and support future races.
The Barking Hall team’s success was especially meaningful as Healthcare Homes marks its 20th anniversary this year, with Alzheimer’s Society as the chosen charity for this milestone. Events such as this underline the impact we can achieve together.
So far, Team ‘Betty’ has raised an incredible £856, as detailed on their JustGiving page. For the latest updates, visit:
