Apprentice Lucy says grasp the opportunities offered by training and development

This week is National Apprenticeship Week  – the 16th annual celebration of apprenticeships across the UK.

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

At Healthcare Homes there are more than 170 apprentices  – about 7 % of our workforce – working on a variety of different programmes from level 2 qualifications right through to level 7 – a masters leadership programme.

Skills for life

The theme for NAW 2023 is ‘Skills for Life’, reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career and help businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with skills for the future.

One of Healthcare Homes apprenticeship success stories is Lucy Pratt who works at Barking Hall in Suffolk. Lucy is currently completing her level 5 Advanced Healthcare Practitioner qualification.

Lucy has worked at Barking Hall for 12 years, starting as a supper cook when she was just a teenager and moving on to a position as part of the care team.

“I always knew I wanted to have a career within healthcare,” she said.

“And to have the opportunity to fit the learning in around my family has been great. I have been given a lot of support from the Healthcare Homes Academy and from the team here at Barking Hall.”

The Healthcare Homes Academy is our own in house training and development department which offers something for everyone from new starters right through to developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Lucy’s apprenticeship course, which consists of workshops, supervised practice and E-learning, has enabled her to increase her knowledge and means that she will be invaluable support for the nurses at Barking Hall and be able to carry out a variety of tasks including distributing medication, writing up care plans, and taking bloods.

Lucy added, “I would urge others to check out what is available in terms of studying via an apprenticeship. It’s not necessarily easy but it is very flexible and rewarding.”

Barking Hall has an excellent record for apprenticeships with another recent apprentice, Charlie Roe, going on to win Apprentice of the Year in the Suffolk Care Awards 2022.

Barking Hall is part of the Healthcare Homes family of 48 care homes and 11 home care branches. The company has recently been named in the Top 20 care home groups for the seventh year in a row by independent review website carehome.co.uk  Barking Hall has a 9.5 out of 10 score on carehome.co.uk and is rated Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
