Residents, families and staff at Saxlingham Hall Nursing Home in Norfolk are celebrating the home’s ‘Good’ ranking in its most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Saxlingham Hall, run by care provider Healthcare Homes, was praised by the social care watchdog for being kind and caring, meeting peoples’ needs, as well as treating residents with both dignity and respect.
The unannounced inspection, which took place in June rated the home, in Saxlingham Nethergate, Norwich, as good. The inspectors noted improvements following the previous CQC rating of requires improvement which took place in August 2019, prior to the home joining the Healthcare Homes family of 48 homes.
In line with new CQC procedures introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, infection control and prevention measures were also inspected to ensure the home is able to prevent or manage any infection outbreak.
During the inspection staff were seen ensuring residents were well treated and supported, respecting equality and diversity. One staff member said, “I always look at it as what would I do for my mum and how would I like to be cared for?” A relative told the inspection team, My relative has never been so liked and well looked after.”
The activities at Saxlingham Hall were praised, in particular the recent Platinum Jubilee party which was enjoyed by residents and relatives. The new activities co-ordinator supported people with activities of their choice, including one-to-one sessions in their rooms if this was preferred.
Residents and their families are involved in making decisions about the care they receive at Saxlingham Hall and given the opportunity to express their views at regular staff, resident and family meetings.
New Home Manager Sam Kirwan said, “We’re delighted to have received a good overall rating which reflects the hard work and care every member of my team demonstrates every day here at Saxlingham Hall and the changes which have been made following the previous inspection from the CQC.”
Healthcare Homes CEO Gordon Cochrane added, “The health and wellbeing of our residents is always our primary concern and, as an operator with a good record in care quality, we are delighted that Saxlingham Hall has been recognised by the CQC inspectors as a good home.
“We are enormously proud of the hard work and commitment of the teams across all of our homes who have delivered great care to our residents through an extended period of very challenging conditions caused by the Covid epidemic as well as a sector-wide staffing shortage.”
