Residents, families and staff at Walcot Hall Nursing Home in Norfolk are celebrating the start of 2022 and the home’s ‘Good’ ranking in its most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Walcot Hall Nursing Home, run by care provider Healthcare Homes – named by independent reviews site carehome.co.uk as a Top 20 Care Home Group for the past five years – was praised by the social care regulator for being kind, caring and treating residents with both dignity and respect.
The inspection, which took place in December rated the home, in Walcot Green, Diss, good in all five categories inspected – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
In line with new CQC procedures introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, infection control and prevention measures were also inspected to ensure the home is able to prevent or manage any infection outbreak.
During the inspection staff were seen interacting with residents in a caring way and treating them with dignity and respect. Inspectors saw the team were kind and supportive of people’s needs, their likes and dislikes. The inspectors noted, “These interactions show staff and residents clearly enjoyed each other’s company, and furthermore, they treat each other as equals.”
The activities at Walcot Hall were praised and residents encouraged to maintain their hobbies and interests. The activities co-ordinator supported people with activities of their choice, for example arts and crafts, reading and games.
One relative commented, “My family member joins in the activities, enjoys music sessions and sees the staff as his friends.”
Residents and their families are involved in making decisions about the care they receive at Walcot Hall. People knew who the registered manager was and felt they could speak up if they needed to. One resident said, “The manager talks to us. I don’t have any worry. Her door is always open.”
A staff member said, “Everyone is friendly, I enjoy coming to work, I feel comfortable talking in meetings and I am proud of the team and the residents. The home has a family atmosphere.”
