Students at Peterborough College have gained insight, information and first-hand accounts of life as a care worker thanks to an input from the manager of neighbouring nursing home, Park House.
The students, who are studying for a diploma in Health and Social Care were visited by Mungwaluku Mupatu, who is known by all as Mupatu, manager of the home, as part of their learning on the residential care sector.
Mupatu has over 15 years’ experience in elderly care and is a trained nurse. He spoke to the students about ‘the day in the life’ of a care home, the difference care assistants and everyone working to support residents can make, and how young people can enter a career in care.
Park House has a strong relationship with the College, having previously welcomed students for work experience placements in the home, and hopes to build on these links to help support and encourage more people into the sector.
Home Manager, Mupatu explains; “It was wonderful to meet the students last week, who are in the middle of their studies around health and social care and beginning to think about the career paths they may wish to explore.
“I hope that my input gave them a useful insight into our world, which is so crucial for our communities. I truly believe that roles in care are privileged and the impact you can make is so significant. My team and I will do all we can to help inspire young people into considering a career in care and will continue to work with the College to progress this.”
In a letter received from students of the Health and Social Clare class of the John Mansfield Campus after his talk, Mupatu was praised for sharing his “valuable information” in order to help them “have a better understanding about the health and social care sector” and were appreciative of him answering all questions posed about working in a nursing care home environment.
