Malthouse’s Maureen, 96, returns to swimming after 20 years

A much-loved resident at The Malthouse care home in Gillingham has made a remarkable return to the swimming pool- at the age of 96.

Maureen Atkinson, a resident at The Malthouse, revisited the RiversMeet Leisure Centre to take part in a special “Swimming for Memories” session- at the very same pool where she last made local headlines two decades.

Making waves for charity

In 2005, then aged 76, Maureen swam an impressive 71 lengths to raise funds for the refurbishment of the Vicarage Schoolroom in Gillingham. Her challenge was featured in the Western Gazette, where she spoke about her lifelong love of swimming and the benefits it brought her.

At the time, Maureen described swimming as “a great way for older people to stay in shape”, adding that she “always felt better after a swim.”

Now, twenty years later, staff at The Malthouse care home organised a surprise visit back to the pool as part of their resident wellbeing and reminiscence programme, which helps residents reconnect with cherished memories and lifelong passions.

Leah Tealey, one the home’s Activities Coordinators, said:

“Maureen’s story has inspired everyone here. She often talks fondly about her swimming days, so we wanted to make it possible for her to relive that experience. The ‘Swimming for Memories’ sessions are designed to help residents revisit the things that make them happy- and for Maureen, that’s clearly being in the water.”
