Pinky’s loving working in the world of care

In the world of taking care of others, there are many people like Carmel Falzon, also known as Pinky because of her distinctive pink hair. She’s an inspiration for those who might want to start a career in caregiving.

Carmel started this job in early 2023. Before this, she had different jobs like selling ice cream, cleaning, and hairdressing. She says she has never been happier than where she is now.

Carmel didn’t like traditional learning in school, but as an adult, she became passionate about education. After starting work as a carer she quickly took on medication training to learn how to give medication to the people she cares for. She intends to do more training, making the most of everything the Healthcare Homes’ Academy has to offer to support her.

Taking care of others involves many things, says Carmel. Some parts of personal care might not be glamorous, but that’s just a small piece of the whole picture. Caregiving is important because it helps people live comfortably, with dignity, and not feel alone.

Carmel loves making the residents happy. She finds joy in seeing them smile and says she feels she has done a good days’ work if she has made the residents happy and put a smile on someone’s face.

During her time working in care Carmel says she has been impressed by the level of support from her co-workers. The team all support and help each other which creates a good environment where everyone can grow. Even though there are challenges, they overcome them together.

Carmel doesn’t just do the basics of her job. She likes to get involved with the activities taking place in the home, singing with the residents and arranging movie time, all helping to make lives more joyful.

Dealing with the death of those she cares for is the hardest part of the job for Carmel, but she accepts that it is an inevitable part of the job. She feels honoured to have known the residents and to have shared part of their lives and learned from their stories.

Outside of work, Carmel takes care of her growing collection of houseplants, goes to the gym, and spends time with friends.

Her story invites anyone thinking about a job that’s more than just routine to consider a role as a carer. Being a caregiver means understanding the beauty of companionship, giving respectful care, and making lives better. Even though it’s not always easy, the rewards are huge, said Carmel.
